First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić started his historic visit to Central Asia, the first bilateral visit of a Foreign Minister of Serbia to that region in several decades. He is to visit the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Tajikistan.

“This is the first ever visit of a Foreign Minister of Serbia to Kyrgyzstan”, stated Minister Dačić in Bishkek after talking to the most senior officials of the Kyrgyz Republic. He added that he believed that his talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Zheenbek Kulubaev and President Sadyr Japarov were very beneficial and that they would significantly contribute to the further development of the cooperation between the two countries.

Minister Dačić conveyed the greetings of President Aleksandar Vučić to President Japarov, as well as his invitation for President Japarov to visit Serbia. At the same time, he announced that Minister Kulubaev was to visit Serbia by the end of this year.

“I would like to state that their position on the matter remains very firm. They are saying that they will never recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo”, said Minister Dačić, He added that there was still a lot of work to do together on establishing a Joint Economic Committee, in view of the low volume of the current trade between Serbia and Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz side is also very interested in the development of cooperation in the fields of defence and military industry, as well as in the fields of education, culture and science. Minister Dačić highlighted the importance of strengthening Serbia’s presence in Central Asia, and the key role of the overall enhancement of bilateral relations with the countries of that region.

“Something that I believe is very important is that they can be our bridge to Asia, one we must have”, said Minister Dačić. He announced a future visit to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, countries that have not been often visited by Serbian Ministers, even though, in his words, these were “countries that are our friends, countries that are supporting us, and we must make efforts to foster friendly relations with them”.
