Đurić: Direct Air Route Strengthens Ties Between Serbia and Canada
Speaking at the send-off ceremony for the inaugural Air Serbia flight from Belgrade Airport between Belgrade and Toronto, which re-established the air connection between Serbia and Canada, Đurić said that Serbia was opening the doors of the world.
“I am incredibly happy and proud that our national airline is restoring flights to Toronto after 34 years. In doing so, we are connecting Serbia not only with one of the largest economies on the planet, but also connecting two important branches of our people. Let us not forget that hundreds of thousands of people of Serbian origin, as well as our people from this region of various other nationalities, live in Canada, and they will now be closer to their homeland,” Đurić stressed.
The head of Serbian diplomacy is among the first passengers on the newly established route, as he is traveling to Canada with a delegation on a bilateral visit.
“This is the first official visit by a Serbian foreign minister to Canada after more than a decade. It marks the opening of a new chapter in relations between our two countries. I am going in good faith, with the desire to refresh the image of Serbia, our aspirations, our values, and what we have achieved over the previous two decades as a country that has tripled the value and size of its economy, a country central to the stability of Southeast Europe, and a country whose people genuinely want to build better relations with one of the world’s most significant economies,” Đurić assessed.
As he announced, important meetings await him as early as Monday with Canada’s foreign minister, the speaker of the Canadian parliament, representatives of the business community, and members of the Serbian diaspora.
“I hope that the opening of this route, which is highly significant for all of us because it further places Belgrade and Serbia on the global map, will at the same time bring thousands of new tourists and facilitate travel for family members coming to our country. In other words, it will connect Serbian families living in Canada with those here in Serbia. All of this is a wonderful reason for us today, here at Belgrade Airport, to celebrate another successful chapter in the work of our national airline, but also our efforts and endeavors to further strengthen our international position,” Minister Đurić emphasized.
Flights between Belgrade and Toronto will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, using Airbus A330-200 aircraft from the fleet of Serbia’s national airline, Air Serbia.
