Tokyo: Visit to Fujimi, sister city of Šabac
A local festival was held in Fujimi on 22 October, which was attended by the delegation from Šabac, and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Japan was the guest of honour.
In her address at the opening ceremony of the festival, Ambassador Kovač pointed out the important jubilees for bilateral relations between Serbia and Japan and thanked Fujimi and Šabac for contributing to the strengthening of the ties between the two countries and peoples.
She pointed out the solidarity shown by Šabac and Fujimi throughout the history of their relations, noting the recently discovered historical information that during the First World War in the village of Mizutani, which is one of the three predecessor villages of Fujimi, citizens collected aid for Serbia, which was then sent through the Japanese Red Cross. She also emphasised the role of Fujimi as the host city to our wrestling team prior to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Ambassador Kovač welcomed the efforts aimed at strengthening economic relations and cooperation through Japanese investments, notably the Jazaki company Jazaki, which opened a factory in Šabac.
Mayors of the two cities spoke about the history of fraternal relations and plans for further strengthening of cooperation, starting with the implementation of the student exchange program, which was the subject of the memorandum of understanding signed during the visit.
The opening ceremony was followed by a tour of the festival, the building of the cultural centre and the city library, and a dinner.
During their stay in Japan, the Šabac delegation also visited the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Tokyo.
