USEFUL INFORMATION

HEALTH SITUATION – Vaccination against hepatitis A is recommended as travel vaccination. In case of long-term stay or special exposure it is also recommended to get vaccinated against hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies and meningococcal disease. Dengue fever is also present in Gabon. There is no vaccine, chemoprophylaxis, or specific therapy for it. Malaria is also present throughout the year. Frequent application of insect repellent to all exposed areas of the skin is recommended during the day (dengue) and evenings and night (malaria). If possible, sleep under an impregnated mosquito net. Wear light cotton and similar clothing that covers the entire body. Medical care in the country cannot be compared to European standards. It is often highly problematic regarding technology, equipment and/or hygiene, particularly in the interior. Gabon lacks experienced specialist doctors, and a negligible number of them speak English, having in mind that the official language of Gabon is French.

SECURITY SITUATION – Petty crimes such as theft may occur in larger towns, such as Libreville, Franceville and Port-Gentil. Cases of purse-snatching and ATM credit card fraud have been more frequent lately. Money, personal ID, driver’s licences, airline tickets and other important documents should be kept safe. Cashless payment should be preferred, and amounts of cash sufficient for one day only should be carried on one's person, without unnecessary valuables. Particular caution should be exercised in large crowds.

TRANSPORT – Most taxis are in a very poor technical state. Due to frequent and serious technical malfunctions and risky behaviour by local drivers in traffic, the risk of accidents is elevated. Vehicles are often unlit, so the problem is even more pronounced at night. Only hail empty taxi vehicles and agree on the fare in advance with the driver. Also pay attention to the exterior appearance of the vehicle. During your stay in Gabon you may only drive a motor vehicle with an international driving permit.

OTHER – The local currency is the Gabonese franc. Cash withdrawal from ATMs and payment with credit cards is only possible in certain cases (e.g. in large hotels). It is recommended to have sufficient cash on one’s person in euros or US dollars and to exchange it at the airport or in banks. Large hotels also exchange foreign currency for their guests in accordance with the official exchange rate.
